  4.     Call it the million-dollar panty raid. An unknown number of
  5. prurient perpetrators broke into the Los Angeles warehouse of
  6. Playboy magazine and swiped some of the Playboy empire's most
  7. valuable assets: namely, 421 hours of unedited videotape
  8. footage displaying Hugh Hefner's Playmates cavorting for the
  9. cameras. Valued at more than $1 million, the tapes constitute
  10. the raw material for such soft-porn piffle as erotic movies on
  11. the Playboy cable-TV channel and videocassette centerfolds. They
  12. included vintage rushes of Sondra Theodore, Miss July 1977 and
  13. a former Hefner girlfriend, interviews with Jessica Hahn, and
  14. the 1989 Playboy Video Calendar. Playboy officials fear that the
  15. culprits will edit the stolen material in video chop shops and
  16. resell it in overseas markets at a discount, forcing the company
  17. to compete against its own pirated products.

  19.     There seems to have been, as well, an attempt to cover up
  20. the caper. The theft occurred in April, but the bereft Bunny
  21. keepers said nothing publicly until two weeks ago, when Playboy
  22. offered a Hefty $50,000 reward for the wayward videos' safe
  23. return.
